The PlayStation 5 (PS5) is a home video game console developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It was released in November 2020 as the successor to the PlayStation 4. The PS5 boasts significant improvements in performance, featuring an 8-core AMD Zen 2 CPU, a custom AMD Radeon GPU capable of 4K resolution at up to 120 frames per second, and a solid-state drive (SSD) for high-speed data streaming. It also includes hardware-accelerated ray tracing for realistic lighting and reflections, and the Tempest Engine for advanced 3D audio effects. The console comes in two main models: a standard version with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive and a Digital Edition without a disc drive. In November 2023, slimmer hardware revisions of both models were released, and a PlayStation 5 Pro model, featuring a faster GPU and improved ray tracing, was released on November 7, 2024. The PS5 supports backward compatibility with most PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR games.
